AEO services: what is included and how to choose an agency

Compare AEO agencies by research, page edits, implementation and reporting. Two example proposals show who does the work and what your team must provide.
On this page

When choosing an AEO agency, ask for an example of a month’s deliverables before a list of supported AI platforms. One provider will monitor mentions; another will also edit pages, clarify facts with your experts and check the published changes. Both can be useful, but they cover different work.
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization: improving how information about a company and its services can be found and used in search and AI answers. The term overlaps with GEO in commercial usage. Specify the systems, buyer questions and team activities; the acronym alone does not define the service.
Start with a buyer question
For a CRM implementation company, a useful question might be: “Who can migrate our customer database while preserving interaction history?” An answer needs migration scope, limitations, responsibilities and substantiated experience. “We deliver turnkey CRM projects” gives the buyer little to compare.
Collect questions across the decision: what problem to solve, which options fit, how to compare suppliers and what happens after purchase. Mark branded questions separately. Describing a named company and recommending a supplier are different outcomes.
What an AEO programme should specify
- Baseline: fixed questions, systems, search modes, languages and dates, with saved answers and source links.
- Content review: existing answers, missing facts, outdated information and inconsistencies between pages.
- Change plan: each page’s buyer question, required evidence, fact owner and concrete edit.
- Implementation: who writes, changes the site, approves and publishes. Show where the client team must contribute.
- Follow-up: deployed changes, accessibility checks, comparable answer observations and conclusions that remain premature.

Two proposals with the same label
This fictional comparison shows two service formats, without prices or promised results. A suits a team able to implement recommendations. B includes agency participation in website changes. Choose according to your available resources.
| Task | A: monitoring and advice | B: implementation support |
|---|---|---|
| Answer checks | Provider saves results for agreed questions | Same, within the agreed scope |
| Facts | Client supplies them | Client expert supplies data; provider identifies gaps |
| Page editing | Client implements recommendations | Provider prepares edits; client approves facts |
| Publishing | Client | Named owner and agreed access |
| Reporting | Observations and recommendations | Observations, deployed changes and follow-up checks |
Without an editor and developer, an advice report may never reach the website. With an established team, you may not need a fully outsourced programme. Set responsibilities before comparing prices.
Ask to see a specific page recommendation
Ask the agency to show a proposed change in full. For the CRM example, “add an AEO block” says little. A useful recommendation would explain which migration limits to describe, which services are excluded, who makes backups and which documented project supports the company’s experience. Every addition should help the buyer assess the actual service.
Choose the format for the task: a table for migration options, instructions for customer actions or a case study for a measured project outcome. Do not turn every page into the same collection of short answers or repeat AEO in every heading.
Clarify promises before buying
Google requires no special AEO markup or files for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Ask for evidence behind any proposal that presents these as mandatory.
For a “guaranteed inclusion” claim, ask which system, question, mode and duration it covers. A single screenshot does not establish stable visibility. Claims about enquiries need visit and enquiry data; mention frequency alone does not measure them.
Read the monthly report in two parts
First examine delivery: changed pages, approvals, delays and reasons. Then review observations for the agreed questions. Separate a brand mention, a domain link and factual accuracy. An incorrect answer containing your name is not automatically a success.
Repeat checks under comparable conditions and explain any differences. If the model or question set changes, mark that change in the report rather than presenting the results as one continuous growth trend. Report measured visits and enquiries separately.
Prepare for the project discussion
Share the site, priority services, markets, languages, customer questions and the team available to implement changes. Include substantiated case studies and disclosure limits. Neaptide agrees AEO/GEO work within a promotion programme, based on the project and available resources.
